There is something unnecessarily daunting about writing a business plan. Perhaps that is because business writers tend to visualize this document as a 'Bible' of sorts, and this implies work beyond the scope of mortal thinkers.
Writers should remember that even the Bible did not fall from heaven in one inspired storm of writing. It came in rough and resplendent pieces, gathered over centuries. Therefore, it is useful to visualize the project of writing a business plan as something evolving in stages, too. A somewhat perpetual work-in-progress, it should unfold as long as one's business exists. In fact, the plan itself resembles a human proceeding toward a goal.
Start with a Skeleton Plan
This means that even undergraduates in their first business writing class should venture to compose a preliminary or 'skeleton' business plan, a tool to pitch their dreams to the world. Most likely, this freshmen plan will not resemble a Wharton Business School document, at least by the end of the first semester of planning, and there is no reason to pursue such an unrealistic goal. However, the composition of a skeleton business plan is feasible for most freshmen, as they map their commercial futures. Limiting the work's initial parameters makes the assignment doable. At the same time, instructors should underscore elements of plan that are timeless and plastic, to aid preliminary elaboration.
